Summer's finally arrived - our favourite time of year here at Woof Frills! The sun's shining, the days are longer, and everyone's feeling happy. Why not share the fun with your pooch? We've got a paw-some list of 7 summery activities, from baking yummy treats to planning a camping weekend away. Get ready for some great adventures!
Homemade Dog Treats
Who doesn't love a tasty treat on a hot day? While you're enjoying your ice cream, it's best to keep it away from your furry friend. But don't worry, there are plenty of ways to give your dog a cool and delicious snack!
You can find great dog-friendly ice creams from popular brands, but why not try making your own? Simply drain and freeze your dog's favourite wet food for a simple and tasty treat. It's a great way to cool them down and keep them happy on a sunny day!
Dog-Friendly BBQ Fun
Barbecues are a must-have for summer, and your dog can join in the fun! While you're enjoying those grilled burgers and sausages, there are plenty of dog-friendly options. Offer them some raw, unseasoned vegetables (no skewers!), chilled fresh fruit like berries and seedless watermelon, or grilled unseasoned boneless meats and fish like salmon.
Remember to prepare their food first to avoid any cross-contamination from seasonings and toppings that might be harmful, like onions.
Although they can enjoy some tasty BBQ treats and the pre- and post-cooking fun, it's best to keep them indoors when the grill is hot and food is being prepared and eaten to prevent any accidents or them accidentally swallowing something they shouldn't.
Pool Parties or Beach Days!
It's time to get wet and have some fun! Grab a paddling pool and set it up in the garden, or pack a towel and head to the beach for a day of sun and sand. Let your pet cool off with a splash, and don't forget to join in the fun yourself!
Just remember to keep a close eye on your dog, just like you would with a child. The sea, or any body of water, can be unpredictable, so be careful and make sure your dog is safe.
Picnic Time
Picnics are a summer classic! Pack up some snacks, grab a blanket, and enjoy a meal outdoors on a sunny day. Your dog can join in the fun too! Pack their favourite treats (maybe in a separate bag so you don't accidentally grab a dog biscuit!) and head out for a relaxing picnic.
It doesn't have to be a big adventure - your own garden is perfect! And why not invite some of your dog's best pals to keep them entertained? Just remember to keep the human treats well away from your pets.
Hiking Trails and Nature Walks
Hiking is a fantastic way to bond with your pet and get some fresh air this summer. Choose a trail that's pet-friendly and offers plenty of shade for your furry friend to cool down. Bring water and food for both of you, and pack essentials like a leash, adjustable harness, and poop bag dispenser.
For a less strenuous adventure, head to your local park or nature reserve for a relaxing nature walk. It's a great option for pets who have less energy or mobility issues but still want to enjoy the outdoors. Last advice: check if the park is pet-friendly before you go and follow any rules or guidelines they have.
Outdoor Events and Festivals
Lots of summer events and festivals welcome pets! It's a great way for your dog to enjoy live music, food trucks, and all the fun of the fair by your side. Before you head out, check to see if pets are allowed at the event and make sure your dog is comfortable with crowds. Remember to bring plenty of water, treats, and anything else they need to stay happy and comfortable throughout the day.
Charity Walks and Pet-Friendly Races
Summer is the perfect time for pet-friendly races and charity walks! It's a great way to support a good cause, get some exercise, and have fun with your pet. Check your local event listings for upcoming pet-friendly events and sign up for a memorable experience.
If you're a dog parent, look for indoor, pet-friendly events that allow you to bring your pooch on a harness or in a carrier. As always, make sure they're comfortable in public spaces before joining in the fun!
